【Learned Something New Today: the 1st Laser Printer - IBM 3800】
Laser printing is an electrostatic digital printing process. It produces high-quality text and graphics (and moderate-quality photographs) by repeatedly passing a laser beam back and forth over a negatively-charged cylinder called a "drum" to define a differentially-charged image. The drum then selectively collects electrically-charged powdered ink (toner), and transfers the image to paper, which is then heated to permanently fuse the text, imagery, or both, to the paper.
The IBM 3800 is a discontinued continuous forms laser printer designed and manufactured by IBM. It is significant as a product because it was both the first laser printer manufactured by IBM] and the first commercially available continuous forms laser printer (1976).
The IBM 3800 was developed and manufactured in San Jose, California. Production was transferred to Tucson, Arizona[3] in 1980. It was also manufactured in Järfälla, Sweden.
An entry-level 3820 sold for $29,900 (equivalent to $71,947 in 2020).

The Next 50 Years at Berkshire
Now let’s take a look at the road ahead. Bear in mind that if I had attempted 50 years ago to gauge what was coming, certain of my predictions would have been far off the mark. With that warning, I will tell you what I would say to my family today if they asked me about Berkshire’s future.
‹
First and definitely foremost, I believe that the chance of permanent capital loss for patient Berkshire shareholders is as low as can be found among single-company investments. That’s because our per-share intrinsic business value is almost certain to advance over time.
This cheery prediction comes, however, with an important caution: If an investor’s entry point into Berkshire stock is unusually high – at a price, say, approaching double book value, which Berkshire shares have occasionally reached – it may well be many years before the investor can realize a profit. In other words, a sound investment can morph into a rash speculation if it is bought at an elevated price. Berkshire is not exempt from this truth.
Purchases of Berkshire that investors make at a price modestly above the level at which the company would repurchase its shares, however, should produce gains within a reasonable period of time. Berkshire’s directors will only authorize repurchases at a price they believe to be well below intrinsic value. (In our view, that is an essential criterion for repurchases that is often ignored by other managements.)
General Assembly Designs Upper West Side Apartment for Art Enthusiasts
Husband and wife James Rasulo and Talia Kasher—whose father is the renowned gallerist Steven Kasher and whose mother is a multi-media artist—trusted Sarah Zames, founder of Brooklyn-based interior design studio General Assembly, to vertically combine two stacked pre-war apartments of approximately 1,000 square feet each into a single home for their small family.
“In order to take advantage of the natural light, we chose to keep the sleeping spaces in the darker lower level and living spaces on the brighter upper floor,” Zames says. “We removed the majority of the walls on the top level to have as much light as possible and we define the spaces by contrasting the neutral architecture with strong color accents and textures such as the blackened steel railing, black and white entry tile, dark oak kitchen and living room rug to create points of interest.”
In addition to the furniture and lighting by Resident, BluDot, NORR11, Nanimarquina, and Allied Maker—among others—a selection of photography, which was sourced from the Steven Kasher Gallery, adorns this open apartment with a lofty aesthetic and feel.
